darkel is the solo project of jean-benoît dunckel, who is also known as half of the french duo air. his first solo album came out in 2006, at the same time as charlotte gainsbourgs 5:55 album that he produced alongside with his acolyte from air. as well as participating to mythical soundtracks with air (virgin suicides, lost in translation, marie antoinette, quartier lointain, pioneer), jean-benoît composed the score of bee, je mappelle hmm, and also the quirky film cyprien but always in a very organic and solar electronic spirit.

*the shakes* is matthew herberts first album under the name herbert since 2006s dark orchestral disco fantasy *scale* (k7!). the album deals with intensely personal issues such as raising young children against a backdrop of an increasingly unstable world and, amongst other things, utilizes the sound of used bullets and shells from ebay as part of its soundscape. herbert himself suggests that the record can be seen as a treatise on how *music helps to motivate, provide respite and divert us from the challenges of the everyday* and that it is *electronic music for the soul*.

haunted doorbell are timothy j. fairplay and matilda tristram who released xylophone together last year on astro lab recordings. picking up where xylophone left off unconnected thoughts on jacking is four tracks of naive melodies, rough slamjack drums, and new age atmospheres. starclash kicks off side a, with its dramatic arpeggios and sid chip crashes, techno to soundtrack the saturday night laser show at the planetarium. following is a night of adventure with its eastern scales and washy broken chorus unit hiss. on side b we have beautiful sheffield - an ode to electronic musics (possibly) most important british city and the title track rounds of the ep - house music for listening to while looking out to sea.

sheik ‘n’ beik are a nyc based cohort specialising in promotion, production and outletting left­of­centre slices of electronic music. with previous releases from family members derek marin, voiski and peter corvaia their 4th release comes courtesy of danny wolfers (a.k.a legowelt) working alongside rush hour regular xosar under their xamiga alias. with this being xamiga’s 3rd release, the pair draw for their trusted arsenal of analogue gear and offer up the ‘bohemian grove’ ep, a woozy brew of foggy textures, gently frazzled hats and detroit­indebted grooves. the title track kicks things off with glassy pads sat atop a long­tailed thud and a sandy shuffle. a distant bass groove wades in ahead of a passage of intricate, band­passed percussion and a circling synth line before ‘cumulus versie’ sets sheets of ethereal vocals and synth strings gently ducking under a taught analogue pulse. ‘midwest’ then sets hissing kicks and frayed hi­hats alongside a rasping bass tone. pitch­bent synth lines then bubble into focus before ‘blizzard’ sets a dystopian tone from the off. a stout kick drum thunders under minor­key chord shifts and a menacing sequence that works to round off another fine addition to the sheik ‘n’ beik series.

this is how it started focuses heavily on the early days of the chicago sound, especially in the formative years at ron hardy s music box.
following chicago s disco demolition night in 1979 the genre s popularity fell dramatically, hence fewer disco records being released.in this era chicago s djs such as hot mix 5, hardy, knuckles & jesse saunders played a variety of styles mixing in italo, electronic pop music, electro-funk and older disco joints often playing their own edits which focusing on the portions of the songs which always rocked the dancefloor. at the end of 1982, when dj frankie knuckles left the warehouse to open the power plant, ron hardy started to dj at the warehouse s new location until owner robert williams renamed it the music box. in 1984, a local label released a 12-inch single called -on and on- by locals jesse saunders & vince lawrence who had simple made the song in order to replace a record which had been stolen from saunders collection, the -on & on- bootleg disco megamix by mach. hence chicago house music was born and a modern day phenomenon followed.

robot ranch records 007 does not relate to james bond but ugur project from istanbul has truly the licence for killertracks. the ep includes four tracks, a grabbing quartet of electronic timelessness, wich can rarely be found in such concentrated form within the ocean of today releases. one definitely will hear, that ugur project is living his music with each breath. this, considering his huge number of releases also with other labels, makes this ep to something special.

tar hallow is a new label based in rotterdam, nl devoted in electronic music. first release on the label is from super unknown, producer dimitris damaskos (damcase) from thessaloniki, gr and currently based in rotterdam, nl. the ep comes with four tracks of distorted techno in a no control journey where there is no need for so many med and high frequencies.

for some it might be kraftwerk, but for me, my favourite electronic pioneers are probably australias severed heads. they were so far ahead of the game that they had to invent a lot of the technology they used. inspired, playful, never boring and always sonically brilliant they pushed at the frontiers of electronic music more than most. by the late 80s they were pursuing a slightly more polished course and made a series of records that had the potential to reach a much larger audience. possibly because of their name they never quite managed that, but they had several big club hits, the dub versions of which crossed over into the nascent house scene. i am honoured that i am able to make the dubs of those three 12 inches from 1988 - 1990 available again.

silas moldenhawer and jonas kenton, both children of the early 80s, grew up alongside each other in the tiny big city of copenhagen. in their teenage years they discovered electronic music and this led them to start spinning records and producing tracks together. years later they met two other talented musicians and formed well-establish danish indie-electro outfit when saints go machine, but still kept on building kenton slash demon as a separate project.

ovc is from chicago where he has been producing, and playing out electronic stuff in one form or another for like ten years including a lot of gigs and some residencies for example in sonotheque. but it s only the last three or four years hes gotten into the deeper side of techno and recently into the deeper/dubbier techno style, his music is a little raw as he does it all in hardware just live to two-track. he weaves together deep narratives out of a collection of blinking sequencers and drum machines, always assisted by a generous dose of reverb and delay. ovc releases with us on telrea the first 3 tracker we have done. all 3 tracks being on the calmer side of electronic music, rich in depth of sound and motion.
